Domestic Cleaning Kills The Dust Mite
The house dust mite makes himself at home as an unwelcome guest. All human dwellings accommodate them and they are happy to invite themselves in. Moreover our very existence ensures that they survive and thrive.
The thing about them is that they do not eat you out of house and home. The dust mite feeds on organic waste with a particular staple favourite being flakes of shed human skin. They love people as not only do we feed them but the modern domestic environment allows them to flourish.
Sadly they often fail to reciprocate our kindness. The house dust mite is a common cause of asthma and allergic symptoms. Some of the gut enzymes produced by the house mite persist in its (excuse us) faeces and can be strongly allergenic.

The house dust mite doesn't take up much space. Its typical length is 420 micrometers and its width is between 250 and 320 micrometers. And that is small. You are able to see one in normal light but only against a dark background.
And if you're not sure what might be staring at you then know that both male and female adults are creamy blue and rectangular in shape. It also has eight legs like all insects so it gets around pretty quickly. In fact its preferred mode of travel is the wind as it literally flies through the air. The dust mite can be transported in a refuse lorry or in air currents arising from normal household activities. It's a hardy little soul as it can survive in all climates, even at high altitude. We, its hosts, provide about 1.5 grams of skin cells and flakes every day which help feed about a million house dust mites. People are generous though. |
We
add to that by generating a level of humidity in the modern home to
prolong its survival. And those conditions are particularly beneficial
in kitchens and bedrooms. Mattresses, carpets, furniture and bedding are
especially welcome. It only takes one gram of dust to support a
population of between 150 and 200 mites.
Bedding is popular, especially pillows. There they can get moisture from the humidity generated by the human breathe, perspiration and saliva.
So keeping humidity low with homes well ventilated and not overheated will undermine its survival.
More importantly there is real danger from this guest. It is recognised that allergens produced by the house dust mite are among the most common triggers of asthma. Additionally it can cause other allergies to develop. If you have itchiness, sneezing, inflamed or infected eczema, watering or reddening eyes, a runny nose or clogging in the lungs, then these are all signs of an allergic reaction to the mite.
One simple symptom of a dust mite allergy is if you sneeze when you wake up in the morning. Once you leave the bedroom then the sneezing will reduce and you'll feel better. But the cycle will then repeat itself at night during sleep. If it persists the allergy may become chronic and long lasting.
AND YES YOU CAN GET RID OF THEM - HERE'S HOW
Avoidance of dust mites and their allergens is the best course of action for those with dust mite allergies.
There are special types of bedding that acts as a barrier to the dust mite. Just make sure the bedding is breathable and able to withstand frequent washing.
